Comprised of five multi-instrumentalists, Young Liars deftly experiments with synth-pop, electronic and indie rock to create catchy indie pop hooks.
Revered as an integral part of the local soundscape, the quintet’s compelling style has set them apart from indie rockers of the same flavor with driving, layered and thoughtful arrangements.
Young Liars is the latest addition to Nettwerk’s expanding label roster, which includes active artists like Ladytron, Peter Murphy, Angus & Julia Stone, William Fitzsimmons, as well as catalog artists like Old Crow Medicine Show and fun.
In near infancy, the blog darlings have already garnered sold-out shows and a promising EP, Homesick Future (set for release February 21st). Today, Nettwerk Records shares lead track, “colors,” from the forthcoming EP. Included in the release is a remix by fellow countrymen, Teen Daze. Read more…
Jason Ogden, the man driving the vehicle known as Penny Blacks has been restless while the 7-piece band chips away at their debut full-length album. To combat the idle hands and overactive songwriting glands, Ogden has recorded a 5-song EP to tide us over until the fall release of the full-length album. Gold Standards is Penny Blacks’ second EP release, and it continues the tradition of capturing the mid-fi, bedroom-torch-song ethos that began when Ogden started posting home recordings on his MySpace several years ago; yet it does something more. The scope of these songs goes well beyond the isolation of a room, an apartment. There is a traveled maturity to songs like “Socorro” and “Chop Yourself…” that suggests a forlorn goodbye to something as well as a confident welcome. Read more…
The Angry Kids are an exciting Canadian-based DJ group who have made their worldwide reputation as front-line re-mixers of Intelligent Dance Music by ingeniously mixing incredible new sounds with classic vocal performances from around the globe. They’ve recently signed a record deal with D:Vision (Italy) and Ministry of Sound (Germany, Austria, & Switzerland) and have released their self-titled début album. Their specialty is in finding that elusive universal groove that equates in any language, and crossing genres at will to keep the party thumping for everyone, be it on the dance floor, or at home with the headphones on.

Caving is the overbearing brother of Andy Dixon’s Secret Mommy. This goon indulges in world music, samples the heaviest rap verses, then drops the bass and collects cheques.

Hosted by venerable T.O. eccentric Pink Eyes, MuchMusic‘s newly resurrected Alt-music videocast The Wedge premiered as a live-to-air affair, one that harkened back to the good ol’ days of free-wheeling days of yore. For all the slagging this writer has foisted on Much lately, I would be remiss is I didn’t acknowledge this attempt to return to form. Rap City made a long-awaited return too, so…The NewMusic next? Wouldn’t that be nice!
