What can be said about the epic return of Simply Saucer, as part of Wavelength’s 11th Anniversary Festival? About time! for one. An unbeatable live music experience since their young Hamilton days self-recording in Saucer House, their rare return to stage these days is a real treat. These veterans of the Punk culture in Canada actually played local YMCA centers in their earliest incarnation. Toronto’s Garrison theater is far removed from those days, and the legend of this band is intact, and their future, as always, is plotted on their own terms.
New Personnel - There is a new quality to Simply Saucer, yet the original essence of the band holds true. Rookie member Dan Wintermans has an interesting role within the band as the web-savvy guy.
Simply Saucer now have a documentary in the works, but in the meantime,
Toronto author Liz Worth’s Treat Me Like Dirt is probably the best resource for researching the first wave of Canadian Punk I’ve read, and it explores the Simply Saucer story in detail. She was also part of the Wavelength 11 conferences, and spoke about the First Wave of Punk, as part of a panel discussion. Read more…
Ever since the amazing nomination for this website on Searchlight 2011, we have been blessed by the attention of many ambitious indie rock acts in this country, some of whom are on the verge of a nation-wide break into the scene. Fitting this description is Vancouver’s Waiting For Sunday, a young, but remarkably sincere and musically mature group, making their debut with flair on The Courage, The Strength, The Wisdom, And Doubt. After a whirlwind of musical activity in her East Coast hometown, Crissi Cochrane was not content to play the local clubs forever, and packed it up for Windsor, Ontario; sister city to Detroit, the spiritual home of Motown Soulsters, Juggalos, White Stripes, and Stooges alike. Inspired by the buzz of a new town, Crissi has been prolific in her many pursuits lately, including amazing performances on stage and on video, and boldly adding her own original voice into the mix. Pine Point, NWT, a Northern mining town shuttered and dismantled during a financial downturn in the 1980′s, lives on in a chilling, and yet warm, interactive experience sanctioned by the NFB. Much like a family’s scrapbook of memories, the pages of a young man’s life come into focus; his small world contained within the simplicities of his small-town life. Yet, as is true in life, truth is stranger than fiction, and the quirky occurrances make his recollections unique and relatable so many years later. It is through his eyes that we partake in this rare slice of Canadiana. Read more…
As a fledgling music writer, and a life-long music fan, I’ve always been fascinated with the roots of the Canadian Rock music scene, and how the long journeys that life brings can influence a man’s music. When I think of The UglyDucklings, and their unique place in time, it seems to me that they were literally inventing the template for creating the kind of unpretentious, credible Rock music that the indie kids of today are still striving for. To be truly ‘timeless’, you have to be able to change the game, and if the past 40 years is any indication, D.J. Bingham lets his music do the talking. Read more…

CIAMM proudly presents our interview with Canadian musician, actor, multi-media artist, and all-encompassing legend, Robert Dayton. For years, Robert’s renegade spirit has powered the stages of Canada’s halls with a unique quality that cannot be pinned to one genre. Perhaps best known as one half of beloved Vancouver duo Canned Hamm, or Hallmark‘s main man, Dayton also engages audiences with his incredible brand of thought-provoking comedy. Endlessly energetic, Robert also stands out as a character actor, enlivening scenes with his inimitable style. Look for his terrific performance in 2009′s Leslie, My Name is Evil , for an example. One of the breakout acts of 2010, Milks & Rectangles, are an amazing story of modern music making, unique in their approach to rock stardom, they set out on their own pathway to glory. CIAMM is proud to present our exclusive interview with Christian Ledwell.
CIAMM spends much of its energy highlighting the contributions of musicians to Canadian culture, but this article looks elsewhere for inspiration – The music video.
Moving images set to music is a potent combination, and an art form in its own right. Ever since the advent of MTV, and later, Much Music, people have been marrying the two for a mass audience. What may be a mediocre song may nonetheless be transformed into a memorable music video, but what happens when GREAT songs are the subject of a skilled director’s attention? Legend. Read more…
