CIAMM Exclusive Interview – Waiting For Sunday’s Mircea Tracke

Ever since the amazing nomination for this website on Searchlight 2011, we have been blessed by the attention of many ambitious indie rock acts in this country, some of whom are on the verge of a nation-wide break into the scene. Fitting this description is Vancouver’s Waiting For Sunday, a young, but remarkably sincere and musically mature group, making their debut with flair on The Courage, The Strength, The Wisdom, And Doubt.

Waiting For Sunday are-

Dan Hudson -Guitar/Vocals

Matt Gauld – Lead Guitar

Mircea Tracke - Bass, Keys

Colin Everall – Drums ,Keys

Produced at the Nimbus School of Music with producer and drummer, Colin Everall, the album is filled with thoughtful lyrics and tasty guitar lines. CIAMM talks with Waiting For Sunday bassist Mircea Tracke about their exciting new video shoot, and investigates the band’s approach to creating their signature sound and image.

CIAMM: Hey congratulations on your album release! I’d be pleased to follow GarfieldUK‘s advice, and review your album, The Courage, The Strength, The Wisdom, And Doubt. You also have some interesting news to share with our readers, maybe you can tell me a little bit about your video shoot for Last Goodbye in January. What was the concept?

Mircea Tracke: The concept for the Last Goodbye video was simple: the whole song would be captured in one take and filmed in reverse. Dan learned to
sing & play the song backwards, and during filming, layers & layers of various things such as flour, molasses, raw squid, etc. were dumped on him. Then, when the song and video are played forwards, everything appears to be coming off him.

CIAMM: Who helped you produce the video? Where did you film?

Mircea Tracke: The video was produced and directed by our drummer Colin Everall with Kymæra Films and was shot on location in Port Moody, BC. From conceptualization through rehearsals to production, the whole thing
took about six months to put together. One of the key factors in this production is that we effectively only had one take get the whole thing right, which is why the timing and coordination of all the elements was so crucial and warranted the extended pre-production and rehearsal period.

CIAMM: Can you tell me about the album title? What are these four attributes of human emotion meant to evoke?

Mircea Tracke: The album title, “The courage, the strength, the wisdom and doubt” is a lyric from track #10 called “The Breakup.” While the song itself was written a long time ago before we began working on the album in earnest, we used that line for the album title since it seemed to reflect the experience and emotions of the whole process of forming the band and putting something so near and dear to ourselves out on the line for people to hear.

CIAMM: Your band website is beautifully conceptualized, did you use elements from your album artwork?

Mircea Tracke: The band website and the album artwork do share a lot of similarities. The website was created first, but the album artwork was based on
certain portions of the website.

CIAMM: Your music strikes an interesting balance between a down-home acoustic sound, and elaborate recording flair. Where will the music go next?

Mircea Tracke: As far as the where the music will go next, we’ve already begun working on the second album and hope to have it ready sometime by late
2011. The new material definitely showcases a wider variety of all the influences of each of the band members. A lot of the songs lean towards a bit of a heavier blues-based, as opposed to down-home acoustic sound; other songs incorporate more electronic and string elements, for example. We have gone to great lengths to ensure that the new songs will maintain the authentic qualities that we felt made the first album so enjoyable to create. Nonetheless, we are also fans of good production and recording values and to that end strive to achieve the needs of the song, whether it be a simple track with just acoustic and vocals or a more complex track with layers upon layers of guitars and other instruments.

Waiting For Sunday’s Debut LP, The Courage, The Strength, The Wisdom, and Doubt, Track-by-Track

Putting forth a solid effort, and having a hands-on attitude to making music, is essential for any band worth its salt, and Waiting For Sunday understand these maxims, as they show throughout this album. Showing respect for the process, they take the necessary effort to craft interesting music from the ground up, adding embellishes via instrumentation, say, a string section, or, by way of studio effects, with restraint; in service of the song. Yet they do not forsake the songs themselves for the nuts and bolts of music making. All this makes for an affecting listen.

Album opener Secrets And Consequences is a great introduction to Waiting For Sunday’s style, it is a smooth, slow burner with cool vocals, both lead and background.

For The First Time is quicker tempo’d, complete with a smoking guitar workout for lead guitarist Matt Gauld.

Misunderstood brings the music to a more acoustic territory…I’m really digging that bass player too…

Sincere lyrics are what makes What’s Done Is Done such a heartfelt track, and the slinky music only enhances its sultry mood.

One Night In Barcelona is a great composition, combining all the band’s strengths into an unbeatable track!

Distractions is a traditional, yet modern-sounding folk number, with beautiful acoustic picking, and earnest, romantic lyrics.

I’ll Give You Something to Scream About is the band’s signature tune. This should be blaring out of car speakers very shortly! Stay tuned!

Torchy and bluesy, Your Love Won’t Hold Us Back is another stand-out track.

Last Goodbye is maybe this album’s sing-along anthem. Would probably slay ‘em live! Very strong track.

The Breakup is an emotionally sincere goodbye to a romance, it’s a probable candidate for Modern Rock Radio playlists across Canada.

Too Rough On The Mind features beautiful viola and glockenspiel(!) and more evocative lyrics.

In My Heart closes off the album with an effecting vocal performance from Dan Hudson. I love this track for the live-to-air immediacy, and again, great stings from guitar, and mandolin!
